CALL FOR PAPERS - 2011 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CANADIAN HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University, May 30-31 and June 1 2011

HISTORY, MEMORY, PEOPLE AND PLACE

“If history is to be creative, to anticipate a possible future without denying the past, it should, I believe, emphasize new possibilities by disclosing those hidden episodes of the past when, even if in brief flashes, people showed their ability to resist, to join together, occasionally to win.”                   Howard Zinn, 1922-2010

History is about many things. Most obviously, it is about the past. But as Howard Zinn reminded us, it is also about the present and the future. It is about memory. It is about people. And it is about place.

What are the intellectual and ethical responsibilities of historians? What different futures can be imagined when hidden episodes of the past are revealed? What is memory and how has it been made and re-made over time? What role does forgetting play in remembering? How do historic sites work—and how do they not work—to commemorate a place, a person, or an event? How do people make history? How does history make people? How have people resisted, joined together, and won? And what impact does place have on who we are, on what we do, and on what we dream?

The Programme Committee for the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Historical Association invites proposals in English and in French from scholars working in any discipline, in any field, and in any era that address the conference theme. We also welcome proposals that do not specifically address the theme.

The Programme Committee strongly encourages panel submissions of three papers and an animator, although we may break up panel submissions. We also welcome proposals or inquiries for other session formats including roundtables, film screenings, websites, podcasts, and posters.

Please submit a 250-word proposal, a one-page curriculum vitae, and your contact information to Donald Wright, Programme Committee Chair, at chashc@unb.ca.

Deadline: Monday 18 October 2010

Please note that presenters must be members of the Canadian Historical Association.
