Tour Guide Assistant Assistant (student)

Location:       Dundas Street West at the Humber River, Toronto, Ontario

Duration:       8 weeks (summer)

Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour, 30 hours/week, 5 days/week, including Saturday and Sunday

In collaboration with Heritage York, the Tour Guide Assistant will be required to learn about Lambton House, the built, cultural and natural heritage of Lambton Mills and the lower Humber River, lead a variety of tour groups including general public and private tours, to assist with public events, as well as Lambton House housekeeping and general maintenance of the grounds.

The Guide may be asked to assist the Records Management Assistant with the documentation of artifacts.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND DUTIES:

-A learner who enjoys sharing their knowledge and experience, working collaboratively;

-Engage in introductory and mentored training about Heritage York and Lambton House operations, its collection and tour strategies;

-Attend regular meetings to review and discuss local history and exhibition information, touring techniques, and projects

-Engage in personal research and tour development strategies;

-Conduct weekday and weekend tours of Lambton House by animating the exhibitions and collection in dynamic ways for learners of all ages;

-Conduct private and public tours by interpreting the collection and exhibitions through conversations with visitors;

-Assist with weekday and weekend events and projects, such as Canada Day, sesquicentennial activities, exhibition and installations, and media promotions;

-Assist with housekeeping and general maintenance of the grounds of Lambton House.

-On occasion assist Records Management Assistant with the research and documentation of artifacts and storage and maintenance of archival and collection materials.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

-Experience gained through employment, education, or volunteer activities, communicating with the public;

-Excellent attention to detail;

-Interest, knowledge and love of built, cultural and/or natural history;

-Interest in and knowledge of Canadian history;

-Ability to research, collate, compile, synthesize, and summarize information; 

-Ability to work independently or in a small team setting;

-Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;

-Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

-Experience with library, archive or museum collections an asset.

RECORDS MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT

Position:        Records Management Assistant (student)

Location:       Toronto, Ontario

Duration:       8 weeks (summer)

Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour, 30 hours/week, 5 days/week including Saturday and Sunday

The Records Management Assistant will work with the two Heritage York Directors of the Board at Lambton House to develop a new database, organize and catalogue artifact and archival documents.

The Records Management Assistant should be ready to work on a variety of projects requiring excellent attention to detail. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND DUTIES:

-Inventory Heritage York artifacts, heritage documents and records, including photographs and Lambton House furnishings;

-Identify gaps in the collection;

-Label, catalogue, record and/or index artifacts and documents as well as furnishings;

-Perform research on objects and documents including photos;

-Identify and create search aids;

-Assist with collections storage including packaging;

-Assist in creating digital records of artifacts and furnishings

-On occasion may be asked to lead tours of Lambton House and assist members of the public with queries regarding the collection and local history
